When Should We Visit the Balkans?

The Balkans offer a wide variety of landscapes, ranging from the Adriatic coast to high mountains, from Ottoman-era bazaars to Central European-style cities. There is no single answer to the question "When to visit the Balkans?" because the right time depends on what you want to do and which countries you plan to visit. In this article, we summarized the seasonal advantages and points to pay attention to. The climate may vary from region to region and from year to year; check the current weather conditions when making your plan.

Spring (April – May): Waking Nature, Quiet Cities

Spring is one of the most enjoyable periods in the Balkans for city sightseeing. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold, and tourist density is lower compared to the summer months. It is ideal for walking in cities like Sarajevo, Belgrade, Skopje, and Mostar, and spending time in the bazaars. As the snow melts in mountainous regions, waterfalls and green valleys reach their most beautiful form. It is useful to have a light raincoat against rainy days.

Summer (June – August): Coasts and Outdoors

For those who want swimming and a beach holiday, the Adriatic coasts (Montenegro, Albania, Croatia) come alive in the summer months. The Bay of Kotor, Budva, Croatia's historic coastal towns, and the Albanian Riviera are popular during this period. Lakes and national parks are also the most comfortable places to visit in summer (such as Lake Ohrid and Plitvice Lakes). On the other hand, temperatures and prices rise on the coasts in July and August, and crowds increase. Early booking and sightseeing in the early morning hours increase comfort.

Autumn (September – October): The Most Balanced Period

For many travelers, autumn is the most balanced season for Balkan tours. The seawater is still warm, the summer crowds have dispersed, and the forests in the mountains change color. It is more comfortable in this period to combine city, nature, and coastal routes in the same itinerary. Since it is the grape harvest and harvest time, it is also a great opportunity for local wine, honey, and cheese tasting.

Winter (November – March): Skiing, Snow, and Christmas Markets

In winter, a completely different face of the Balkans emerges. Jahorina and Bjelašnica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bansko in Bulgaria, and mountain centers in North Macedonia are preferred for skiing and winter sports. In December, Christmas markets are set up in some cities; illuminations, hot drinks, and local delicacies add a distinct atmosphere to city trips. Roads in high altitudes may be closed due to snow, so it is necessary to make a flexible plan. Coastal towns are quiet in the winter months, and some businesses may be closed.

Visa Status When Choosing a Country

While some Balkan countries offer visa-free entry for Turkish citizens (such as Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia, and Kosovo), some require a Schengen or national visa (such as Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania). Since practices may change, verify the current conditions from official sources before traveling. The visa status of each tour is additionally specified on the tour page.

Which Period Suits Whom?

  • Culture and city tour: April-May and September-October
  • Sea, beach, and boat tour: June-September
  • Nature hiking and photography: May-June and September-October
  • Skiing and winter atmosphere: December-March
  • Budget-conscious travelers: Months outside the summer peak mostly offer more affordable options.

Before Setting Off

  • Check the validity period of your passport.
  • Learn the region's currencies (Euro, Serbian Dinar, Convertible Mark, Albanian Lek, etc.) and card acceptance status.
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes and season-appropriate layered clothing; cobbled streets and slopes frequently appear.
  • Do not underestimate the distances between cities; border crossings can take time.
