The Alhambra Palace, one of Granada's greatest treasures, is one of the most eye-catching and impressive examples of Andalusian Islamic architecture. As one of Spain's most visited historical sites, Alhambra is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has gained worldwide fame. This famous structure began to be built in the 13th century as a defensive fortress and palace on the plateau over the Sabika hill overlooking Granada, and its construction continued until the 15th century. Due to the red color it acquired from the red soil used in its construction, it was named Alhambra, which means "The Red".
